Tell Me All About Homalomena Plants
Homalomena plants are gorgeous! They generally have large green foliage and grow upright.
These tropical plants belong in the family Araceae. This means Homalomena plants are cousin to the more common philodendron, pothos, and scindapsus.
Are Homalomena Easy To Take Care Of?
Homalomena plants require some attention, but can survive beautifully indoors with the right care.
Compared to other set and forget it houseplants, such as a Sansevieria Whale Fin, you'll need to keep an eye on your homalomena plants fairly regularly.
Once you get your homalomena into the right potting mix, set it in the right location in the house, and recognize when it needs watering, your plant will be easy to take care of.
Homalomena Plants Like Humidity
The issue I struggle with the most for my Homalomena plants is to make sure they get enough humidity. Humidity levels in most common households should be sufficient.
Winter Months
In the winter though, we constantly run the heater and frequently use the fireplace. I often think my pink splash would benefit from more humidity.
Once a month or so, I'll run the humidifier next to the plant just to give it a bit of a boost. But otherwise, it seems to do okay.

How Do You Care for a Homalomena Pink Splash?
Homalomena Pink Splash is fairly simple to take care of once it's settled. Three basic requirements:
- Light: Bright, indirect light for best growth.
- Water: Water semi-frequently, when the top couple inches of the soil feel dry.
- Soil: Chunky and airy soil that retains some moisture.
Keep reading for more details on each of these requirements.
How Much Light Does This Homalomena Need?
Like most indoor house plants, the Homalomena Pink Splash grows best in bright indirect light.
This means that the plant will be happiest when it is in a bright room in the house. Keep the plant set back a bit from the windows, or use a sheer curtain to prevent sun burn.
You'll see that my Homalomena sits right next to a window. It's currently next to a west facing window. As you may suspect, the sunlight from this window is usually too strong for the plant.
However, because it is currently winter, the sunlight that currently comes through the window is fairly weak. We tend to have a lot of cloud coverage during the winter months too. Therefore, I moved my Homalomena Pink Splash to that spot to make sure it gets enough sunlight to grow.
In the summer months, I move it so it does not receive the harsh afternoon sunlight.
How Often Should I Water My Homalomena Pink Splash?
The Homalomena Pink Splash does not like to fully dry out. Therefore, water it when the top few inches of the soil feels dry.
My Homalomena Pink Splash is happy when I water it about every 7-10 days, year round.
Bottom Watering
Generally, it's best to bottom water plants, including for a Homalomena. That simply means letting the water come up to the roots through the bottom drainage hole.
To bottom water, set the pot in a big bowl. Next, fill the bowl with a few inches of water. The water should go just about halfway up the pot. Then, I let the plant soak up the water from the drainage hole for about five minutes, topping up the water as necessary.
In reality though, because my Homalomena Pink Splash has large and unwieldy stems and leaves, I only bottom water my plant about once every 6 weeks.
Best Potting Mix For Homalomena Pink Splash
Like most aroid plants, Homalomena Pink Splash likes chunky potting mix so the roots do not get water logged. I use a mixture of tropical potting mix, pumice stones, and orchard bark.

Is Homalomena Pink Splash a Rare Plant?
Homalomena Plants are fairly uncommon. You may come across some varieties more frequently than others.
In the past, I have seen both Home Depot and specialty plant shops sell the Homalomena Selby and the Homalomena Emerald Gem. However, beyond those two varieties, I don't often come across Homalomena plants in person at shops.
Online plant retailers are a different story though. If you are after a Homalomena plant, you can likely find what you are looking for online.
Where To Buy a Homalomena Pink Splash?
I bought my Homalomena Pink Splash from Canopy Plant Co. This plant is sturdy enough to be shipped, although it might not arrive in perfect condition because of the way it is shaped.
Do you see the few leaves on my plants that have dried out crispy edges? Those are the original leaves that were damaged in the shipment.
When I first received the plant, it was a bit wilted and some of the leaves appeared to have been smushed against the box. Because the leaves are large and soft, I think even with the best packaging, some damage is inevitable.
With a bit of water and sunlight, the plant quickly perked up and I knew it would be fine. The plant also had a very healthy root system. In no time, my Homalomena Pink Splash started producing new leaves.

Styling Tips For Homalomena Pink Splash
A Homalomena Pink Splash is an incredibly gorgeous plant. It'll look great just about anywhere in the house.
Give it space to grow
This plant demands attention and space. Chose a place in the house where it has room to grow.
Homalomena Pink Splash features large broad leaves. A single leaf quickly grows bigger than even my hand. Homalomenas typically also grow long stems. In all, my plant currently spans about 30 inches across and 12 inches high.
I have seen other Homalomena Pink Splash plants grow in a more upright form than mine. Even though I always keep my pink splash in a bright room, it keeps growing outward. It's almost like the plant is looking for more sunlight.
The new leaves that my plant produces seem to grow more upright though. Time will tell if I can encourage my pink splash to grow taller. Until then, I love how it commands so much space.
Use a plain pot
Let the variegated leaves receive all the attention by potting this plant in a simple and plain pot.
My pink splash is in a muted grey pot. I like how the color of the stem contrasts with this pot.
If you like a dramatic look, this plant would stand out in black pot. However, I recommend against using a white pot. Because the pink variegation is a pastel color, the white pot will wash the color out.
