Kids Reading Challenge
I developed this fun reading challenge to help my kids become more proficient readers. As an avid reader myself, I love to share the love of reading with my kids.
This challenge includes both easy to achieve activities that make reading fun, as well as challenges that will help kids grow as a readers.
My son's school just kicked off their school wide reading challenge, but it merely asks kids to log the number of minutes they read each day. While minutes spent reading is important, it feels a little lackluster to me because where is the challenge in that?
So I made this printable kids reading challenge. My kid intends to use this alongside the school reading challenge. He's really excited about it, and I do hope it helps increase the number of minutes he reads.
What is a Reading Challenge
A reading challenge is a tool that makes reading fun, as well as helps readers grow and develop.
Reading challenges can simply be prompts that encourage readers to find new books. Or they can actually include a list of books to read.
For example, check out Popsugar's reading challenge (for adults). It encourages readers to expand into various genres. On the other hand, the International Booker Price Reading Challenge includes a list of 13 books, as well as reading guides and extras.
I love reading challenges because they inspire me to broaden what I might normally read. It's also an invaluable way to find new interesting books.
What Makes A Good Kids Reading Challenge
For a fun kids reading challenge, I find there needs to be a mix of different types of challenges. This reading challenges has three types of ways to get kids to read.
Using a mix of prompts, I hope to make reading fun for kids and encourage them to develop as readers.
Easy to achieve fun reading challenges
First, I list some very easy to achieve challenges, just to get kids started. These challenges are silly and fun. I include them to give kids a few challenges they will conquer with confidence.
Silly reading challenges include, for examples, read while wearing a costume and read a book with a flashlight.
Challenges to get kids to read new books
Next, I list some challenges that help kids find new books to read. Sometimes my kids get in a comfortable pattern reading the same book or series over and over again. A reading challenge is a way to help them get out of that cycle.
For instance, one challenge asks kids to read a book a friend recommends. Another challenge is to read a book by an author you've never read before.
Challenges to read different genres
Lastly, this challenge includes prompts for kids to expand their reading. This might be the most difficult for kids to complete, especially if the kid is a hesitant reader. However, I think it's really important to read different genres to expose kids to different vocabulary and writing styles.
The reading challenge includes reading a biography or memoir, as well as poetry.
