Our favorite songs to help learn skip counting by fives
Listening to these songs helped my kid to memorize how to count by fives easily. He loves singing along to it.
The Scratch Garden counting songs are currently the most requested songs by our son. I've linked to the youtube video below, but you can also find them on Spotify.
Hands on activities for counting by fives
One of the easiest hands on way to learn skip counting is by grouping objects together and counting.
We did this with our Grimms Leonardo sticks. But jumbo colorful craft sticks would also work great!
I asked my kid to find a toy and make groups of 5. Then let him use my phone to take a picture of it.
You can also do this activity with other household objects. Try pasta, buttons, crayons, or even dried beans. Using small objects also help with fine motor skills.

Make a count by 5 number line
I don't have a picture of this activity, but we like to make number lines when learning to skip count.
There's nothing complicated about it. It's a fun and easy activity that lets kids practice several skills, including:
- Scissors skills
- Using a tape dispenser
- Writing the numbers
To make the number line, first cut up wide strips of construction paper. Next, tape them together to make a long strip. Lastly, write the numbers across counting by fives.
Once the number line is done, watch it become a belt, path, or even a train track during playtime!
