How to explain solar system to preschoolers

    Solar system activities for preschoolers

One of our favorite ways to learn something new is to use play dough! Making solar system planets with play dough is a fun and easy activity to do with a preschooler.

Make our solar system with play dough

I showed my kid the video below from Play-Doh, and he was so excited to get started! There are other videos on You Tube, but this video is concise and easy to follow.

Here’s our final creation. Our planets didn't quite look perfect like the ones in the video, but he was proud of his solar system!

Tips for making planets with play dough

    Here are a few tips:

    • If you want to make labels, try to make them before you make the planets. You can see in our photo that we didn't make labels for our solar system. That's because my kid didn't want to take a break away from the Play-Doh to make the labels.
    • If using the string method in the video above is a bit too fiddly, you can just estimate and draw your own orbits. We tried the line method, and it was fun to try, but as you can see, we didn't get perfect orbits
