Surprise Ideas for Birthday Mornings
We love birthday mornings! The kids are always so excited when they wake up. We try our best to make it super fun and exciting for the birthday kid. Here are some of our easy to do surprise ideas that get the kids shrieking with glee.
Birthday Scavenger Hunt
My kids love when the very first thing they do on their birthday morning is a scavenger hunt! I set it up at night, and leave the first clue taped to their door.
So in the morning, when the birthday kid wakes up, the scavenger hunt is ready to go. I don't have to scramble in the morning to get it ready. If I'm still lounging in bed, the birthday kid is occupied for a bit.
We hide the birthday presents at the end of the scavenger hunt. Our kid thought it was so funny when we hid it in the shower!
Birthday Balloon Place Setting
The kids are so impressed when they wake up, and the table set for a birthday breakfast! I tape up some balloons on either side of the birthday kid's chair. Then, I tie a balloon to the place setting.
It makes birthday breakfast exciting, and a bit celebratory. Moreover, the best part is that this surprise idea is easy to set up the night before. So, if you have a weekday birthday morning, there's no rush to get this surprise prepared.

Birthdays that fall on weekdays are always a bit of a rush. I always want to make the birthday kid's morning special. At the same time, we are usually crunched for time because the kids need to get to school.
Here are a few special breakfast ideas that are quick enough to make on weekdays:
- Funfetti Waffles
- Fairy Bread - colorful sprinkles on toast

Weekend birthday breakfast ideas
Weekend birthday breakfasts are way more relaxing. If you have a bit more time to make a birthday brunch, these are some of our kids' favorites:
Sprinkle Rimmed Glass
We made sprinkle rimmed glasses for both the kids' birthday morning. They absolutely loved it!
This is a perfect birthday morning idea because it turns a morning glass of milk into a special treat. It also takes just a few seconds to make.
Giant Number Balloon
We buy the kids a giant number balloon every birthday. It's become a tradition. The kids both look forward to it every single year.
Giant number balloons can be a bit pricey to buy already inflated. Also, they are difficult to drive with in the car. Even more, inflated giant balloons are hard to hide away for a surprise.
For those reasons, I buy a helium tank to inflate the balloons myself. Helium tanks and giant number balloons are both convenient to buy.
We have had some issues with giant number balloons not floating, even if inflated with helium. From my experience, the larger the number, the better it will float. For example, 40'' balloons tend to float better than 32'' balloons.
Also, numbers without many bends and curves, such as the numbers one and seven, float better. Those numbers require less material, adding less weight to the balloon. Therefore, number eight was particularly problematic.
But even if you can't get the extra large number to float with helium, they are easy to tape up. Similarly, you can hang the balloon with string from the ceiling. That's how we did it with the number four in the photo.
Gift Wrap the Bedroom Door
Gift wrapping the bedroom door is a super easy birthday morning idea that the kids absolutely love! We simply cover the entire door with gift wrap paper. The kids smile seeing it every time they enter their bedrooms.
This simple idea adds a pop of color to their day, which is always a fun way to start a birthday morning!
