    What are the Five Ws?

The Five Ws are questions that you can ask to gather information.

    They are:

    • Who?
    • What?
    • When?
    • Where?
    • Why?

I ask these questions to help my kid understand a story, an event, or other happenings. Mostly, I ask him these to help his reading comprehension.

    The Five Ws song

This is our favorite song for the Five Ws. It's short, catchy, and breaks it down in a very kid-friendly manner.

    The Five Ws craft cube

I made this Five Ws (and 1 H) craft cube to play with my kid when we read stories. The free printable is below.

How to use: We will read a story book, then take turns rolling the dice and answering questions.

Making the craft: It is an easy craft to help kids remember and learn the Five Ws. It also helps:

    • develop scissor skills,
    • glueing skills, and
    • fine motor control by folding and assembling the cube.

Practice discussing the Five Ws with these photos

I love these pictures because they are exciting with a lot happening that my kid can describe. We used these photos and discussed the Five Ws.

We made up entire stories around these photos using the questions below:

    • Who are the kids in the pictures? How old are they? Where do they live?
    • Why are the kids doing those activities?
    • What are they doing? What might the kids be feeling?
    • Where are the kids? Are they in a city? Are they at home? Are they in a foreign country?
    • When is the activity happening? Look at the clothes they are wearing - is it spring, summer, fall or winter? Is it day time or night time?

    The Five Ws worksheet chart

I created this little chart to help my kid with answering the Five W questions. We read a book together then he wrote down his answers.
