This is a fun frog themed food activity for kids! We used apples, grapes and strawberries to make a tasty frog snack.

Silly Frog Theme Apple Snack for Kids - Feature

Kids can make this healthy apple frog snack

This is a quick and tasty activity for kids to build their own frog-shaped snack. It uses mostly all fruits, so it’s healthy too.

We’ve been learning about amphibians and frogs at home, so I thought it would be fun to let my kid make a frog themed food. This apple frog turned out to be a super fun treat for him to make.

There are other apple frogs on the Internet, but none seemed easy enough for a preschooler to make himself. So when I started this activity, I wanted to make sure I created a frog themed food that my kid could do himself.

My kid loved assembling his own frog themed snack

I wasn’t quite sure how I wanted my apple frog to look like, but I had my ideas. Once we got into the kitchen though, and I explained what we were going to do, it turns out, my preschooler had his own thoughts on what his frog should be doing.

Kids can help cut and prep the fruits for their frog snack

Originally, I wanted to let him help me cut the fruit. We have been working on knife skills with this kid knife. I think he could have been able to cut the grapes, apple legs and marshmallows too.

But I wasn’t sure I could supervise him with a knife, as well as watch his baby sister crawl around at the same time.

So, I went ahead and cut all the fruit for him. I gave him the cutting board with the pieces prepared, and just let him build his frog.

He changed his mind a few times along the way.

Watching him put together his frog, I thought it was neat that he treated it a bit like a puzzle. He would move the fruit pieces around until he found the perfect fit.

In the end, he loved his jumping frog with a tongue sticking out. It’s leaping through the air trying to catch a fly.

What you need to make this frog themed snack for kids

You don't need much for this activity. Here's what we used for our frog apple:

    • One green apple
    • Two green grapes
    • One jumbo marshmallows
    • Two raisins
    • One strawberry

Below you can see how I cut the apple. Ideally you don’t want to cut into the core at all (unlike what the picture below shows). The photo above with the cutting board will also show you the apple after it has been fully cut.

How to prepare the apple for this frog shaped snack

First, slice down one side of the apple, close to the core, but not into. This round side will be the frog’s head.

Slice down again on the other side of the core, but this time leave about 1-centimetre from the core. Set this side aside as it will be used to make the two front legs.

Slice down the same side, close to the core but not into it. You will have a 1-cm thick circle. This is the frog’s body. (I sliced too far into the core in the photo.)

To make the hind legs, slice down the two sides of the apple. Again, slice close to the core but not into it.

To make the two front legs, take the round apple side you previously set aside. Cut it into 4 slices. Use the middle two slices as the front legs. Eat the two on the sides - they are extra.

Tips for assembling your apple frog snack

It’s really easy to put the frog together, but these few tips might help.

For the apples, dip the slices in salt water to prevent them from browning. This isn’t necessary, but it will make the apple frog look crisp and fresh.

For the strawberry tongue, I originally gave my kid one slice to use. He told me frogs have really long tongues, so he needed more slices.

Too bad that I had eaten all the other slices, except one more. In hindsight, it would have been much more fun to give him all the strawberry slices to make a super long tongue!

For the frog eyes, cut a jumbo marshmallow in half. Then stick the sticky side on the apple. He simply rested the raisins on.

Hope you and your kid enjoy making this apple fruit frog!
