Find activities for preschoolers to learn all about reptiles
Hi! This week at home, we did some fun activities to learn all about reptiles. I've shared details of the reptile activities I did with my kid at home, including links to the resources that we used.
As a recap, here are the reptile activities for kids we did this week:

Learning about reptiles for kids - introduction
On Monday, I introduced my preschooler to the basic characteristics of reptiles. We did the following activities:
- Discussed the difference between reptiles and amphibians
- Learned a catchy song
- Watched a short informative video
- Read some books
- Watched a Magic School Bus episode
These are the reptile facts for kids that we focused on this week:
- Reptiles are cold blooded
- Reptiles lay soft leathery eggs on land
- Reptiles have dry leathery skin
- Reptiles are have backbones (they are vertebrates)

First, we watched the videos below. The first video is a short catchy song.
This second video describes reptiles more in-depth. But it's short and engaging enough for a preschooler to understand.
We read these reptile books for kids
We loved these books to learn about reptiles. I'm listing them all here, but we slowly worked through them during the week.

- Little Kids First Big Book of Reptiles and Amphibians
- DK Find Out! Reptiles and Amphibians
- Mixed up Chameleon - this is such a silly story book in case you haven't read it before

My preschooler made a reptile craft - a pom pom turtle
On Tuesday, my kid made this super cute pom pom turtle!
In our pom pom turtle post, we include lots of pictures and a directions how you can make this reptile craft with supplies you probably already have at home.
We also watched this short YouTube video to learn more about turtles.
We did an experiment to learn the difference between cold blooded vs warm blooded
On Wednesday, we further explored what being a cold blooded animal means.
We watched a short YouTube video, and we did a hands on experiment to see the difference between a warm blooded and cold blooded animal.
Experiment for preschoolers to learn about cold blooded vs warm blooded
This is a short and quick experiment to help kids see what cold blooded vs warm blooded means.
Equipment You'll Need:
- Thermometer (to take your kid's temperature)
- Instant read thermometer (to take the temperature of a glass of water) (we used one like this)
Steps
- First, find 3 different places with 3 different temperatures. For example, you can use a sunny spot outside, a shaded spot outside, and a spot next to a warm appliance.
- Fill up 3 small glasses of water using room temperature water. Set one glass in each of the 3 locations. Wait about an hour.
- When ready, take your kid to each of the three locations and take their temperature. Their temperature should stay the same.
- Next, use the instant thermometer and take the temperature of the water in the glass. The temperature should be different.
- Explain how the water changes temperature based on the environment. This is what happens to cold blooded animals.
Make a veggie dip shaped as a reptile
On Thursday, for lunch, we made a veggie dip that is shaped like a crocodile. This is a really simple reptile activity to have your kids get involved in the kitchen.
