We love this free kids underwear sewing pattern from Waves & Wild. It's so comfy and easy to make with scrap fabrics.

I am so grateful that Waves & Wild has shared this free pattern for Speedy Pants. Thank you! This was a really fun project to sew up one evening.
Some might think that I have more than enough time if I'm sewing my kid custom underwear. I get that ☺️. Before I caught the sewing bug, and had a little girl who likes to just create stuff with me, I probably would have thought the same thing.
But these days, I feel that being able to design and make something with my daughter is really precious. Her excitement makes it a lot of fun too. And if we're talking core memories, how cute will it be if she remembers us making her own underwear at the age of five.
Plus, the final product put a huge smile on her face! She thought it was so funny that we sewed underwear. It was as if the thought that we could make such a thing never crossed her mind.
It really is the small things, like being able to sew a pair of underwear together, that make our home time special.

Sewing Kids Underwear
Besides fuzzy good warm memories, I think I'm a convert to sewing up kids underwear for so many other reasons:
- We can chose to use organic cotton
- It's a great scrap buster
- It's easy enough to make with just a bit of spare time
- She says they are so so so comfy
- No more elastic stringy frays that come from cheap store-bought underwear
Lastly, one of her favorite reasons to sew her own underwear is that she gets to match her underwear with her outfits. We both love that extraness! You can see the rest of the outfit we made with this super adorable fabric in our We Love the Be Invincible Skort post.
Love the fabric? So do we! It's from Frollein-S, a shop that carries a lot of organic fabrics in incredibly cute prints.

Kids Speedy Underwear Pattern Review
Did I mention this Speedy Pants pattern is free? Thank you again, Waves and Wild! We made the briefs version only, so I can't speak to the boxers that's also included with the pattern.
Serger / Overlocker
I used a serger for the entire pattern. Quick and easy serger projects are always a joy to make. The pattern says this kids underwear pattern can also be sewn with a zigzag or stretch stitch on a regular sewing machine, but I didn't try it.
Fabric
We used fabric that is 95% organic cotton and 5% spandex, with 200gsm fabric weight. Because there is no elastic band in the underwear pattern, a 4-way knit fabric with good stretch and recovery is necessary.
Thread
I used Woolly Nylon for the underwear in both the top and bottom loopers. The instructions don't list stretch thread or Woolly Nylon as a requirement, but I thought it would be a nice touch as it is stretchier and softer against skin.
Both left and right needle used regular all-purpose serger thread.

Changes
I made these pants exactly as the pattern is drafted and written, and had no problems.
However, when I make these next time, I think it would be easier to cut notches on the waist band and leg bands before assembling. I've already measured and marked out the notches on my pattern pieces for the next pants I plan to sew.
Also, while I used one fabric for the entire project, I might try mixing and matching next time. It'll depend on the fabric scraps I have available though.

Do I Love this Kids Underwear Pattern?
Absolutely! This is a pattern that I'd be happy to sew over and over again. As long as my little one is interested, I'll keep sewing these with her.
If you are looking for a short fun serger project, or just a way to craft and create something at home that's practical and useful, don't underestimate how much fun it can be to sew a pair of underwear.
