I love this gorgeous air plant display! We came up with this DIY air plant decoration for our home. This fun idea makes our light fixture into a hanging terrarium for our air plants.
Air Plant Display
Air plants are gorgeous decorations for the home. They are beautiful, unique, and make whimsical displays.
Recently, we turned our dining room table light into a creative air plant display. This is an easy DIY project that requires no tools and only creativity.
If you don't have a glass pendant light over your dining table, I hope this inspires to you take a look around your home to see how you can do something similar.
Are You Looking For Air Plant Decoration Ideas?
A few months ago, we were looking for a creative new way to display our air plants.
We previously kept all our air plants stacked in this large glass terrarium. The plants enjoy the extra humidity, especially in the winter. This glass terrarium also makes a gorgeous centerpiece on the table.
However, the newest members of my plant family, a few Homalomena starter plugs, needed the humidity. So I took out the air plants.
Love the other plants you see in the pictures? You can see my Raven ZZ and my Scindapsus Jade Satin in the corner of the room.
Air Plant Display DIY
Looking around our home, we found a perfect new home for the air plants. Our dining table chandelier consists of 7 glass globes of various sizes.
We immediately knew we wanted to convert a few glass globe pendants into air plant displays. I have always loved the look of plants that hang over tables.
Honestly, we never needed the brightness that seven light bulbs provide. Seven light bulbs overhead always felt a bit harsh.
I love mood lighting, and this is one way to improve our dining ambience too.
How Did We Make This Creative Air Plant Decoration?
Three easy steps to make this creative DIY air plant display:
- Remove the light bulbs
- Add in the air plants
- Place a thin plastic sheet on the bottom of the glass pendant to hold up the air plants
For the thin plastic sheet, I cut up a few of these shrinky dink crystal clear sheets. You can try to use any thin clear plastic. Maybe you can reuse a some sort of toy packaging.
I cut the plastic sheets into rectangles. Next, I carefully placed them in the bottom of the glass pendants. Since air plants are lightweight, the plastic sheet holds them up with no problems.
Chandeliers To Use For This Plant Decoration
The glass pendant lights that we have over or dining table came with our home. I can't find the exact same lights to link to.
However, I did find this 8-Light Mason Jar Chandelier that looks like it would work great for a hanging air plant display. With the mason jars, you wouldn't need the clear plastic sheet on the bottom.
Creative Air Plants Hanging Terrarium Decor
I treat the pendant lights like a hanging terrarium. The glass pendant light shades provide additional humidity for the air plants. Because of the humidity, we don't need to water the air plants as frequently as we water air plants displayed in the open.
Once every two weeks, we take the air plants down and give them a generous spritz of water. Then, we allow the air plants to dry before putting them back into the glass pendant display.
It's super easy to take the air plants down and put them back up. On the days that we give the plants water, we can see a bit of humidity build up in the glass pendants.
